Manchester City Football Club

Manchester City Football Club through its City in the Community (CITC) scheme uses the power of sport to engage with people between the ages of 6 – 75 and encourage them to lead a physical, healthy lifestyle.

Working in partnership with a range of organisation from Manchester Primary Care Trust and Manchester City Council through to Sport England, CITC runs a range of activities designed to Get Manchester Moving.

Alex Wiliams (MCFC), Chris Love (Deputy Head MPHDS), Councillor Roy Walters and Delana Lawson (MPHDS Health Trainer Co-ordinator) at the launch From holiday soccer camps and multi-sports activities including rock climbing and skiing, CITC works with young people to make sure they are involved in healthy and constructive activities during the school holidays and evenings.

The community scheme also works with adults and young people with disabilities providing sporting and coaching opportunities throughout the week and liaises closely with BME communities to provide sporting and physical activities for all.

But CITC is not just for young people – with partners PACE the City of Manchester Stadium hosts weekly Nordic Walking sessions and throughout 2007 the stadium will play host to events such as family health days and activities for older people including tea dances.

Manchester Public Health Development Service

Manchester Public Health Development Service is part of Manchester Primary Care Trust, which is your local NHS Community Trust.

We work to improve health across the city of Manchester. We have a particular emphasis on reducing health inequalities and work to address the factors that affect health and well-being. We achieve this by working in partnership with other organisations, groups and local communities.

Manchester City Council Leisure Services (Manchester Leisure) is a public service, which aims to provide programmes of sport and physical activity for the residents of Manchester. This requires a wide and varied range of diverse programmes to cater for all, taking into account the differing needs of the population, with opportunity, choice, accessibility, affordability and inclusion at the forefront of service planning and delivery.

Manchester Leisure has a number of key areas of work:

Sports Development and Events
They are concerned with maximising children, adult and family participation in physical activity, sports and leisure pursuits by working with partners to help break down barriers and address inclusion.

Maximising participation in sport by all sectors of the community within Manchester and provide pathways to excellence that enable every person to fulfil their real sporting potential.

Maximising the impact of major sporting events on the communities of Manchester by working closely with national governing bodies of sport and other regional and national partners to develop and deliver a lasting legacy to the city of Manchester.

Sports Development boasts an 80 strong team of Officers, of which include Sports Specific Officers, Community Development Officers covering the most deprived areas in Manchester, an over 50’s Development Officer, a Health Manager, a Disability Manager, a Big Lottery Fund sports Programme delivered in schools, and a team funded primarily through the Home Office Positive Futures Programme.  The team are dedicated to ensuring the residents of Manchester have the opportunity and accessibility to participate in sports, physical activity and leisure pursuits - About Sports Development

Outdoor Parks and Open Spaces
Manchester boasts more than 130 parks, gardens and open spaces, some of which form a link from the Mersey Valley in the south of the city to the Medlock Valley in the east and the Irk Valley in the north.  Manchester’s two largest parks are Heaton Park in the north and Wythenshawe Park in the south of the city. Both these boast fine halls, beautiful gardens and woodland areas, together with a wide selection of sporting activities.  Manchester also has a number of smaller parks which offer a range of sports activities, historical features or just a beautiful place to walk or relax - parks

Indoor Facilities
The leisure centres, swimming pools and sports halls offer a wide range of facilities and activities. Access is available as a casual 'pay as you go', or monthly / yearly membership.  In partnership with the City Council, Serco Leisure Manchester manages twelve of the city's indoor facilities.
